This circuit, from an old Argentine publication, makes it possible to use a 1 mA full-scale milliammeter in different types of measurements on the bench. One should only be careful not to exceed the limits of the instrument, for example, with excessive currents, which can cause it to burn. The use of the diode makes it possible to work with alternating voltages and even to check the operation of oscillators and small transmitters. The same circuit is valid for 100uA instruments with the exchange of R for a 4k7 resistor.
