This circuit is from an article in the December 1988 issue of Radio Electronics magazine that teaches how to assemble an electronic compass. The compass is based on a toroidal flux transformer whose magnetic field is altered by the earth's field, thereby detecting the direction of the lines of force and indicating the North.
