In the figure we show a circuit in which the output voltage of a 78XX voltage regulator is modulated by the light that falls on an LDR. With proper feedback, the circuit can be made to work as a servo or light sensor, exciting some type of load depending on the light. The gain of the circuit and the adjustment of the operating point are made in the trimpot, which can cause the circuit to cut in the absence of light.
