This circuit was obtained in the publication 101 Electronics Projects of 1979. The circuit can be assembled easily, since all the components are common. The transistor can be the BC548. With this circuit it is possible to use a common analog multimeter to measure engine speed or even the pulse rate of an intermittent system. The circuit can also be used in the car, as suggested, powering it with its own 12 V battery.
