This circuit controls a relay from the light incident on a sensor. The sensor is an LDR and the adjustment is made through a potentiometer or trimpot. The power can be 6 or 12 V, depending on the voltage of the relay used. The transistors can be the BC558. The high voltage of the relay used in the original circuit is due to the type of relay used at the time.
