Using any general purpose or medium power transistor such as the BC558 or BD136 it is possible to light a small neon lamp from 1.5 V voltages. The transformer is from a source with a secondary to 4.5 to 9 V and current in the range 50 to 200 mA. The neon lamp is common, and the resistor can be changed to obtain the best performance.
