The presence of C1 in this circuit from a 1977 publication, reduces surges. The circuit is for 30 V output but can be changed to other voltages by changing the zener. Use BC135 for Q1 and TIP31 or TIP41, suffix C for currents up to 3 A. The power transistor must be equipped with a heat radiator.
