The voltage reference for this source is given by a battery, which provides a very low current and therefore will have great durability. The transistor can be the TIP42 for currents up to 3 A at the output and the transformer is 6 to 9 V secondary. The diode must be 1N5404 and the filter capacitor can TR values between 470 uF and 2200 uF. The transistor must have an excellent heat sink.
